By Jared Isaac Aragón. Evocative music for piano solo.
Of this work, the composer writes:
In the summer of 2016, I had the opportunity to spend some time in the villages of Second Mesa on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona. My partner Samivaya, a member of the Hopi Tribe, invited me to meet his family as well as to observe a Katsina Home Dance, or Niman. While on the Reservation, Samivaya’s family shared with me several books on Hopi culture and I was captivated by a part of their Creation Story. In one portion of the story, the spirit Sotuknangu is assigned the task of creating nine universes. It is this image of the creation of multiple universes, or perhaps what we would call a multiverse, that grabbed my attention. In this piece, I make no intention to imitate any of the traditional music I heard while out on Second Mesa; Instead, my artistic goal is to depict emotionally what I imagine happened at the creation of these nine universes.
